Vanadium

Vanadium is a chemical element with symbol V and atomic number 23.

Vanadium was discovered twice.

First it was a spanish mineralogist Andres Manuel del Rio who in 1803 found a new element in some lead-bearing mineral. He called it erythronium (Greek word for “red”) because upon heating most of its salts became red.

About 30 years passed, when in 1831 a swedish chemist Nils Gabriel Sefström working with some iron ores rediscovered the element which he named “vanadium” in honour of the Germanic goddess of beauty and fertility, Vanadís (Freyja) because of its beautiful multicoloured compounds. Both names referred to the wide range of colors found in vanadium compounds, however the name vanadium still stands rather than del Rio’s suggestion of erythronium.

Characteristics

Vanadium is hard and ductile greyish silvery metal. Sometimes it is described as “soft”, because it is pliable, malleable and not brittle (in spite of selenium and tellurium which have quite fragile forms). It has good corrosion resistance to alkalis, sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid and salt waters.

Applications

Approximately 85% of vanadium consumption goes to metal industry where vanadium is used as an alloy called ferrovanadium or as a steel additive. Small amounts of vanadium added to steel increase its strehgth considerably.

Vanadium steel is used in surgical instruments, tools, axles, bicycle frames, crankshafts, gears and other critical components.

Vanadium has the ability to increase the strength and temperature stability of titanium. Titanium alloys with vanadium is used in high-speed airframes and jet engines.

Other common uses of vanadium includes: sulfuric acid production, protection steel from rust and corrosion, production of glass coating that block infrared radiation, fake jewellery making etc.
